Man dies in fire at Carroll home

A man who was injured in a fire in his Carroll County house Wednesday died of his injuries yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, the state fire marshal's office said.

Daniel Merchant, 47, was found by firefighters lying on his dining room floor when they responded to the fire about 1:30 p.m. at his two-story wood-frame house in the 7500 block of Middleburg Road in Detour.

Merchant suffered smoke inhalation and was taken by ambulance to Frederick Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Shock Trauma. Officials said he died yesterday morning.

The fire began in the living room sofa, but the cause remains under investigation. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
