Chase on I-795, Beltway ends in man's arrest

May 22, 2008

A man was arrested yesterday after a police pursuit that began on Interstate 795 in Owings Mills, moved to the Baltimore Beltway and ended on Edmondson Avenue in Catonsville, according to Maryland State Police.

Sgt. Arthur Betts said a trooper tried to pull over a 1998 Jeep for a traffic infraction about noon in the southbound lanes of I-795 at Owings Mills Boulevard. "He refused to stop," Betts said.

Troopers pursued the vehicle south on the highway and onto the outer loop of Interstate 695, followed by least a dozen cruisers from the state and Baltimore County police, Betts said. The driver got off at Edmondson and drove on residential streets until the car struck a utility pole on Academy Road.

Betts said there was minor damage to the pole.

Police said the driver, Khalfani Daniels, 22, who gave an Elmer Avenue address in Northwest Baltimore, was taken to Franklin Square Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries before being taken to the Golden Ring Barracks. There, Daniels was charged with multiple traffic violations, including operating a motor vehicle without a license, police said.

Betts said troopers are allowed to pursue vehicles with permission from supervisors. He said commanders would examine videos from cameras on the Beltway and interview the troopers involved to determine the speed of the pursuit.
