Man shot during fight in Howard

Howard County police say a 24-year-old man was shot during a fight outside a Columbia apartment complex early yesterday.

Officers were called to the 5800 block of Thunder Hill Road for a report of shots fired. Police say two groups of people were fighting, and Wayne Hamlin was shot in the shoulder and had cuts to his face. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was released after treatment.

Investigators say neighboring apartments were evacuated temporarily after witnesses reported people running into an apartment.

No one has been charged in the shooting. Police say so far they don't believe the incident is linked to a fatal shooting Saturday in the 5800 block of Stevens Forest Road in Columbia.

2 killed in weekend shootings in city

Two Baltimore residents were killed in the southern part of the city during the weekend in unrelated incidents, police said yesterday.

At about 6 p.m. Saturday, 18-year-old Valerie Barnes was shot multiple times in a house in the 800 block of Pontiac Ave. in Brooklyn, said Officer Troy Harris, a Police Department spokesman. Barnes was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead about midnight. Barnes' last known address was in the 5300 block of Carriage Circle. Police had no suspects, Harris said.

At 12:20 a.m. yesterday, officers from the department's Southern District were called to the 1700 block of Hollins St., where they found a 42-year-old man who had been shot in his vehicle. The victim, who was pronounced dead on arrival at Shock Trauma, was identified as Jeffrey Gause, whose last known address was the 100 block of Vine St.. Police said his assailants fled on foot.

2 teens charged in man's death

SALISBURY - Salisbury police say two teens have been charged with killing a 34-year-old man Saturday night.

Police say Marquel Dijion Brumskin, 16, and an unidentified 15-year-old boy were fighting with the man about 10 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Pond along Mitchell Road. A witness to the fight told police that all three disappeared behind an embankment and that, moments later, the teens returned without the man.

Police say the man was found floating in the pond and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not identified pending notification of next of kin.

The two boys have been charged with second-degree murder and six other offenses.
