Born in Cooksville in 1910, Holland worked to ensure human rights. He served as vice president of the Maryland State Conference of NAACP branches, and as president of the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for 10 years. He died in November 1987.

Nominations must be submitted by June 3. The winners will receive their awards at CAC's annual Holland Awards Dinner, to be held Oct. 16 at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel.

The nonprofit Community Action Council provides programs and emergency services to low-income Howard County residents.

CERN meeting planned for Tuesday

CERN (the Community Emergency Response Network) will hold a meeting for members from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Linden Hall in the Dorsey's Search Village Center, Columbia.

CERN, an initiative of the Horizon Foundation, is a coalition of 73 members, including leaders in the county's Health Department, Howard County General Hospital, the Howard County Chamber of Commerce, Howard Community College, Howard County Public School System and independent schools, Howard County Public Library, and others. CERN convenes six times a year to develop practices for increasing the county's preparedness in the event of a disaster.

Richard Krieg, president and CEO of the Horizon Foundation, is CERN's chair; Mary Lasky, program manager for Business Continuity for the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, is vice chair.
