Cecil College commencement today

Cecil College will hold its 39th annual commencement ceremonies today on the North East campus.

The graduation will include students who were awarded degrees or certificates in December and wish to participate in the formal commencement.

The college will award 189 associate degrees and 58 certificates. Some students will receive more than one degree or certificate.

The 2008 commencement is the first such ceremony since the college changed its name on July 1, 2007, and students were given the option of having "Cecil Community College" or "Cecil College" imprinted on their diplomas.

Only 14 of the 206 students chose Cecil Community College, while the other 192 requested diplomas with Cecil College.

Elementary students out at 1 p.m. Friday

Harford County public schools will dismiss elementary school students at 1 p.m. Friday for teacher planning time.

Schools and offices will be closed May 26 for Memorial Day.

PRAXIS test prep starts June 2

Harford Community College will offer an online PRAXIS Test Preparation course beginning June 2.

This class prepares teacher candidates and provisional teachers for the reading/writing and math portions of the PRAXIS I test.

Harford Friends plans summer programs

The Harford Friends School will offer summer learning programs for children ages 4 to 13, from June 16 to Aug. 15.

Programs include:

*Backyard Wonders, July 28-Aug. 1

*Animal Crackers, Aug. 11-15

For ages 6-8:

*Worms to Wings, July 21-25

*Fun With Spanish, Aug. 4-8

For ages 8-12:

*Castles, Knights and Kingdoms, June 16-20

*Go Green! Beyond Recycling, July 14-18

For ages 10-13:

*Ornithology for Everyone, June 23-27

For ages 11-13:

*Creative Theatre and Improvisation, July 7-11

Programs are held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays in Fallston. The cost is $190 per session, plus an activities fee for most programs not more than $30.

Free books on HCC's history available

The Community's College: Harford Community College's First Fifty Years, edited by Professor Don Avery and Dean Loretta Henderson, was recently published.

The book features information about the history of the college, with a section of photographs. It is free of charge to the public.

Harford Community College celebrated its 50th anniversary year in 2007. The school began as Harford Junior College in September 1957 at Bel Air High School.

Over the years, Harford Community College has grown to meet the needs of the community by providing high quality, accessible and affordable educational opportunities and services.

Rotary offers Cecil College scholarships

The Rotary Club of Elkton has established the Golden Honor Roll Endowed Scholarship to provide financial assistance to Cecil College students.

The scholarship recognizes rotarians who have dedicated more than 50 years of service to the club and its main mission of service.

The scholarship is available to students in all programs of study as well as credit and noncredit courses. There are no restrictions on grade-point average for the initial award or residency requirements.

Cecil College hopes to begin awarding the scholarship for the 2008 fall semester. Students wishing to apply for the Rotary Scholarship can call 410-287-1053 for information.

Alumni group plans Bermuda cruise

The Cecil College Alumni Association will sponsor a 40th anniversary celebration cruise to Bermuda May 23-28, 2009.

The five-night cruise from Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, N.J., aboard Royal Caribbean International's Explorer of the Seas, will feature an overnight stop at Kings Wharf, Bermuda.

Early booking rates are $749 per person for an interior stateroom and $1,049 per person for ocean view, based on double occupancy. The cost includes shipboard room, ocean transportation, most meals, some beverages, most onboard entertainment and a $50 tax-deductible donation to the alumni association.
