Williams touts peaceful aura

Bill's Rant

May 16, 2008|By BILL ORDINE

I suppose Ricky Williams means well, but it's just so hard to take the guy seriously.

The Miami Dolphins running back - who had a couple of sabbaticals from the NFL partly inspired by a journey for self-discovery and partly because the league whacked him for using marijuana or some other strange substance - said he was invited to go on that ill-fated boat ride with the Bears' Cedric Benson.

As it turned out, Benson got involved with some lake police down in Texas and wound up being pepper-sprayed and arrested. The Chicago running back said that he was wrongfully accused of boating while intoxicated and that police used unnecessary force.

So here comes Williams, who said he might have been able to defuse the situation.

"I think if I had come down, things might have worked out a little bit differently," he told the Austin American-Statesman. "I find I have a calming influence on people I'm around."

Uh, Ricky, I observed that same thing when I was in Amsterdam and that calming influence that you've noticed - it may not just be you.
