JUNE

EVENING UNDER THE STARS WITH THE NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY -- Roanoke Island Festival Park's Outdoor Pavilion / 252-475-1500 or outerbanks.org. 8 p.m. June 5. Take blankets and lawn chairs for this seventh annual symphony performance. Free.

ROGALLO KITE FESTIVAL -- Jockey's Ridge State Park, Nags Head / 877-359-8447. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 14-15. Enjoy this two-day festival celebrating one of the beachiest symbols of summer, and honoring the local resident and inventor of the flexible wing, Francis Rogallo. Kids activities such as face-painting and of course, kite-making, across the street at Kitty Hawk Kites.

WHALEHEAD CLUB UNDER THE OAKS ARTS FESTIVAL -- Currituck Heritage Park, 1101 Corolla Village Road, Corolla / 252-453-9040, ext. 3, or whaleheadclub.org. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. June 18 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 19. Artists' work will be on display. There will be food, live music and children's activities. Free; a parking donation is requested.

JULY

FESTIVAL AND FIREWORKS -- Currituck Heritage Park, 1101 Corolla Village Road, Corolla / 252-453-9612 or whaleheadclub.org. 6 p.m.-11 p.m. July 4. Fireworks start at dusk. Free.

WRIGHT KITE FESTIVAL -- Wright Brothers National Memorial, Kill Devil Hills / 877-359-8447, 252-441- 4124 or kittyhawk.com. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 12-13. See demonstrations for kites up to 100 feet long. Make and fly your own kite and enjoy kid-friendly games and contests. Free.

AUGUST

KITTY HAWK KITES/OCEAN GAMES -- Ramada Plaza, 1701 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills / 252-441-4124 or kittyhawk.com. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 9. Games include a 5K kayak race and kayak demos, plus stunt kite lessons all day. A sandcastle-building contest will begin at 1 p.m. Free.
