WHFC-FM manager publishes book

Gary Helton, the station manager for WHFC-FM at Harford Community College, has published his fourth in a series of Arcadia books, Images of America: Baltimore's Buses and Streetcars.

The book is a regional/pictorial history of Baltimore mass transit.

Helton will be signing copies of his book at Barnes and Noble in White Marsh on May 31.

Honor society nets honors

The Alpha Alpha Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of Two Year Colleges at Cecil College recently earned a number of honors at the organization's 2008 convention in Philadelphia.

Honors included:

Andrew Davis was elected 2008-2009 president of the Middle States Region.

Adviser Jane Sharrow was recognized by the Middle States Region for her 12 years of service with the Distinguished Chapter Advisor Award.

Laura Styles received a Distinguished Chapter Member award.

Dean of nursing is named at HCC

Harford Community College has named Laura Cianelli Putland dean of nursing and allied health professions.

She was formerly interim dean and assistant professor of nursing.

Putland has a bachelor of science and master's degrees from the University of Maryland. She joined Harford Community College in 1984 and became an assistant professor of nursing in 1993. She was also coordinator of medical/surgical nursing II.

In July 2004, she became interim nursing program administrator and was named nursing program administrator in July 2005. She has been interim dean of nursing since June.

Harford Christian wins Envirothon

Harford Christian School students recently swept all five categories of the regional round of the Maryland Envirothon competition.

The competition tests students' knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, water and current environmental issues.

The school's environmental studies team will represent Harford County at the next phase of the contest, the statewide competition in June.

The state winner will go to the international contest in Arizona in July.
