Union won't back slots

May 09, 2008

Breaking with the state teachers union, the Montgomery County Education Association voted Wednesday night not to endorse Maryland's slot machine gambling referendum, according to a news release from Marylanders United to Stop Slots.

The Maryland State Teachers Association voted this spring to endorse the slots referendum that will be before voters in November. The measure would allow 15,000 of the devices at five locations around the state. But 9members of some local teachers unions criticized that decision at the time, saying that opinion on the proposed gambling expansion was mixed within the state's education community.

The Montgomery County group decided Wednesday night to stay neutral on the referendum.
