Athletics update

Oakland, which traded ace Dan Haren this offseason and was thought to be in a rebuilding mode, has been one of the major leagues' biggest surprises. It beat the Texas Rangers yesterday to improve to 19-14, good for second place in the American League West. The A's hot start can be attributed mostly to pitching. Oakland's starters have a 3.51 ERA, the best in the AL, and its relievers entered yesterday with a 2.76 ERA, also tops in the AL. Overall, its staff ERA is a 3.26, making up for a punchless offense that has hit an AL-low 17 home runs. Former Oriole Jack Cust led the AL with 25 walks through Saturday. Emil Brown was second in the AL with 26 RBIs.
