Poet to lead workshop on writing free verse

Poet Sue Ellen Thompson will lead a workshop that examines approaches to writing free verse at 1 p.m. May 16 at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

Those who attend the workshop "How `Free' is Your Free Verse?" will have an opportunity to experiment with creating a free verse poem from a prose paragraph.

Miller branch offers Teen 'Zine

The Miller branch library's Teen 'Zine program, in which youths ages 13-17 can contribute to a new online newsletter written by teens for teens, invites participants to meet at the library from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 12.

To start, attend a meeting or make an appointment with the library's teen specialist. Registration is not needed.

Cheerleading, football sign-up set

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registration for Elkridge Hurricanes Flag and Tackle football and cheerleading.

Practice begins in August at Elkridge Landing Middle School. The season runs through mid-November.

Flag football for ages 5-6 costs $85; tackle football for ages 7-14 costs $160. Cheerleading for ages 5-14 costs $125. Tackle football participants are placed on teams based on age and weight.

Free bridge, other games -- The Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center sponsors a bridge group from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; pinochle meets from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Those who attend are invited to bring a bag lunch. Coffee, tea and treats will be provided. Donations are accepted for the snack fund.

Duplicate bridge is available from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays. Mah-jongg is played at the center from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Admission is free.

A community service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis Wallas center. The Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center is at 10481 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.
