Joe Ehrmann to speak at civility forum

Former Baltimore Colt and NFL star Joe Ehrmann, a community activist, will speak at a "Choose Civility Spring Symposium," to be held from 8 a.m. to noon May 14 at Grace Community Church, 8200 Old Columbia Road, Fulton.

The focus will be on making a difference in your community.

The program is part of the Choose Civility in Howard County initiative to make the county a national model of respect, consideration, empathy and tolerance, sponsored by the Howard County Library and about 40 community partners.

Among the sponsors are The Horizon Foundation, Howard County General Hospital and Friends of Howard County Library.

Guided nature walk focuses on seasonal changes in forest

The Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a nature walk from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the refuge's North Tract entrance. The guided leisurely stroll, designed for all ages, will emphasize seasonal changes in the forest.

"Weed Warriors," when volunteers of all ages are needed to help pull non-native invasive plants at the refuge, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon May 17. Participants should bring gloves, water and hand tools, if they are available.

A "Bird Walk" for all ages, scheduled from 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. May 17, will guide participants to search for birds in several refuge habitats. Field guides and binoculars are recommended.

Library has programs for aspiring authors, teen singers

Writers are invited to share their work with other aspiring authors for mutual support and feedback at 7 p.m. May 12 at the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane.

Registration is not required.

The library will offer a Karaoke Night, when teens ages 11-17 can practice for the library's Teen Idol contest or simply perform for their friends, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 15 at the Savage branch.
