Police shot a man in West Baltimore last night after he shot another man at a gas station, fled and then fired on plainclothes officers, a police spokesman said.

Four officers from the Violent Crimes Impact Division were on patrol about 10:50 p.m. when they witnessed a shooting at a Citgo service station in the 2800 block of Edmondson Ave., police spokesman Sterling Clifford said. The victim was shot in the hip.

The officers, who were in plainclothes but identified themselves as police, pursued the suspect in the shooting to the 2700 block of Lauretta Ave., where the suspect stopped near the curb and fired on the officers with a large black handgun after they surrounded him, the spokesman said. Three of the four officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries, Clifford said. He did not identify the suspect or the hospital. The victim of the gas station shooting was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the spokesman said.
