Towson dentist

Dr. August Raymond "Gus" Machen, a retired Towson dentist, died Saturday at the Blakehurst retirement community in Towson of complications from a fall he suffered a month ago. He was 87.

Dr. Machen was born and raised in Baltimore and was a graduate of city public schools. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School.

During World War II, he served as an Army dentist and was assigned to the European theater of operations.

Dr. Machen, who maintained a general dental practice in Towson for more than 35 years, retired in the 1980s.

The longtime Owings Mills resident had lived at Blakehurst for more than a decade, and he was an avid gardener and wine collector. Other interests included travel, reading and fine dining.

His wife of 55 years, the former Ilse Fischer, died in 2001.

At Dr. Machen's request, there are no services.

Surviving are two nieces, Janet C. Moore of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Louisa M. Egan of Fontana, Calif.
