Sen. Hillary Clinton this week said she agreed with Republican Sen. John McCain's proposal for a summer gas tax "holiday." Her rival in the Democratic presidential race, Sen. Barack Obama, disparaged the idea.

"My opponent, Senator Obama, opposes giving consumers a break from the gas tax. I understand the American people need some relief. ... If we suspended it and made up the lost revenues [with a windfall profits tax], that's the best of both worlds."


"Keep in mind that the federal gas tax is about 5 percent of your gas bill. If it lasts for three months, you're going to save ... half a tank of gas. ... Instead of really trying to solve the problem, you use a gimmick."
