Lotta lemon

TABLE TALK

April 30, 2008

Lemon meringue pie is not an everyday dish. It is something you can treat yourself to, say, once a week. That works out well in the Baltimore area, where some pie makers set aside certain times to roll out the lemon meringue. The Woman's Industrial Exchange, which once featured a dynamite lemon meringue pie, served it on Thursdays. Now the exchange serves up handmade crafts, not pies.

Hitting the road, or more precisely the Beltway, I was able to find spots in Carroll and Howard counties and in Northeast Baltimore that serve this mixture of lemon curd topped with fluffy meringue. Baugher's Family Restaurant in Westminster and the Double T Diner in Ellicott City (there are others scattered around the metro area) offer the pie daily. But Fenwick Bakery in Northeast Baltimore bakes it only on Wednesday and Fridays.

Double T Diner

Address --10055 Baltimore National Pike (Route 40), Ellicott City

Phone --410-750-3300

Hours --6 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m.-midnight Friday-Saturday, 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday

This was a very big piece of very sweet pie, 2 1/2 inches tall, for $2.80. The wavy meringue was sugary, the lemon curd somewhat goopy.
