Police name victim in fatal Anne Arundel crash

April 27, 2008|By Tanika White

Maryland State Police released yesterday the name of the driver who died Friday in a three-car collision in Anne Arundel County.

Joseph Norfolk, 23, of Queen Anne Road in Glen Burnie was driving a 2002 Cadillac Escalade on Route 10 shortly before noon when he died in a fiery crash. Also involved was Jason J. Wise, 24, also of Glen Burnie, who was driving a 1996 Ford Contour.

Police said that Wise stopped suddenly "for unknown reasons," causing Norfolk to crash into the rear of the Contour. A Ford truck operated by Jason R. Fisher, 40, of Gaithersburg, struck Norfolk's car from behind, rupturing the fuel tank, which caused a fire.

Anne Arundel Fire and Rescue officials extinguished the fire, police said. Norfolk was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is being investigated by the Maryland State Police crash team and no charges had been filed as of yesterday. Several witnesses told police that Norfolk and Wise might have been involved in an altercation before the crash.

A passenger in the truck, Gary Ponow, 46, was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with critical injuries. Another passenger in the truck, Jose Murillo, 39, was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The passengers in the Contour, Bobbi L. Steiner, 25, and Jeremiah Wise, 4 months, were also taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
