Neighbor Ride opens new house

Members of the community are invited to join Neighbor Ride's board of directors, volunteers and staff in an open house to celebrate the organization's recent move to new quarters at 8950 Route 108, Suite 115, Columbia.

The open house will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 2 at the new location.

A volunteer-based nonprofit organization dedicated to decreasing isolation and improving the quality of life for older Howard County residents, Neighbor Ride provides reasonably priced, reliable supplemental transportation for health care appointments; volunteering; religious, cultural and social activities; and other personal needs for people 60 and older.

The next orientations for prospective volunteers will be held at noon May 2 and 7 p.m. May 14.

Help the horses make their move

Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon is seeking volunteers to help in the farm's move to a 58-acre agricultural preservation property near the current 18-acre facility. The nonprofit horse-rescue organization has received an agritourism enterprise permit, which authorizes the move.

Volunteers are needed before Wednesday, when equipment, materials and horses must be moved.

A wish list for donations is posted on the farm's Web site: www.defhr.org.

Pull the mustard, cook the weed

The Friends of the Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway will sponsor their ninth annual Garlic Mustard Challenge from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. May 4 in the Avalon and Glen Artney Area of Patapsco Valley State Park.

Volunteers are needed to pull garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata, an invasive plant that is crowding out native wildflowers, and participate in a "cook's challenge," in which amateur chefs will create tasty dishes using the weed. Music, games for children, environmental displays and prizes for all volunteers are also planned.
