Long Reach elections Saturday

The Long Reach Community Association will elect three Village Board members to two-year terms in elections to be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Four candidates are vying for three seats: incumbents Karen Hitcho, Edward Coleman and William Taylor, and challenger Josh Friedman. Their statements are available at www.longreach.org.

Voters must show identification, such as a driver's license, and tenants must also produce a lease. Absentee ballots are being sent to every Long Reach household and are available at the front desk at Stonehouse in the village center.

Stonehouse is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Classes, therapies -- The East Columbia 50+ Center is offering appointments for Reflexology - deep foot massage - 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. The cost is $40 for a 50-minute treatment. Appointments are also available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Fridays. Reiki treatments are available by appointment 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first and third Fridays of each month. The gentle technique is said to restore physical, emotional and spiritual balance and harmony. The cost is $30 for a 55-minute treatment.

Tai Chi for Arthritis is offered 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The emphasis is on breathing and inner stillness to relieve stress and anxiety. The cost is $32 a month; No drop-ins.

"Harmonize Exercise Class" meets 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. O.H. Laster, a personal fitness trainer, teaches "Stamina, Strength, Stretch and Synergy." The cost is $24 a month; No drop-ins.

Pilates class, to improve strength, flexibility and coordination while reducing stress, meets noon to 1 p.m. Thursdays. The cost is $36 for a six-week course.

Book club -- The east Columbia branch library's "Morning Books With Coffee" book club will discuss Channeling Mark Twain, a novel by poet Carol Muske-Dukes, at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The library is at 6600 Cradlerock Way. 410-313-7700.

School anniversary -- Stevens Forest Elementary School will hold its 35th anniversary celebration May 9, 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Former students, parents, friends of the school and staff are invited to contribute memories by stopping by the school for a brief videotaping session. Clothes swap -- The Long Reach Community Association will sponsor a "Kids' Clothes Swap," 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Long Reach Village Center. Rain date is May 3. Yard sale -- Howard County Relay for Life will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the Columbia library grounds, 6600 Cradlerock Way. The cost for space is $10, and sellers must donate at least 50 percent of proceeds to the Howard County Relay for Life. Relay for Life, an overnight community event in which team members raise funds for the American Cancer Society, will be held June 6-7 at Hammond High School. Register online at www.howardrfl.com. Deter theft -- The Maryland/DC Anti-Car Theft Committee and the Howard County Police Department will offer a free Vehicle Identification Etching event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Amherst House in the Village of Kings Contrivance, 7251 Eden Brook Drive. A unique vehicle identification number can be engraved on of the major pieces of glass as a deterrent to theft and to assist in returning stolen vehicles to owners.
