Fire and Rescue honors its heroes

The annual Howard County Fire and Rescue Awards Ceremony was held Wednesday evening at the James N. Robey Public Safety Training Center in Marriottsville. Among the attendees was Capt. William Rozier, who recently returned from a tour in Iraq and who awarded plaques to those instrumental in putting together care packages for him while he was overseas, said department spokesman William Mould.

Also there was the family of a child who was 18 months old when responders found him in respiratory arrest in May and quickly restored his breathing.

Following are award winners for their service in 2007, in order of presentation:

Unit Citation: Crews handling a Feb. 6 incident at Route 32 and Rosemary Lane.

Meritorious Service Awards: Battalion Chief Charles Sharpe; Firefighter/HVO Thomas Boyd; Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin Koons, Firefighter Erik Fesmire; Battalion Chief Gary Jones; Capt. Raymond Petry; Lt. Paramedic Karen Fisher, Firefighter John Fitzgerald; Firefighter John Caruso; Firefighter Christopher High; Firefighter Jeffery Carter.

Chief's Award: Crews of Tower 2, Ellicott City, and Tanker 11, Scaggsville

Unit Citation: Crews of Ambulance 96, Columbia

Gold Medal: Capt. John Bean; Lt. Dave Olson; Firefighter/Paramedic Charles Wood

Bronze Medal: Firefighter Joshua Burchick; Firefighter John Jenkins

Life Safety Award: Assistant Chief Kevin Simmons

Gift of Life Award: Crews handling a May 18 incident, 7810 Fieldstone Court
