Classic style, rural privacy

Desirable Spaces

Blending classic Greek ornamentation and elegant Tuscan-style color themes, this architecturally traditional house offers rural privacy in the southwest tip of Howard County.

"I was inspired by the look and feel of '60s movies," says homeowner Madelene Bates. "I liked how the rooms are classically decorated, but show restraint."

She helped decorate the home that was designed and built by her husband Bruce Bates, a custom homebuilder and real estate agent. The two have lived in the house with one of their sons since 2005, perfecting the interior and making small additions to the decor.

Both Bruce and Madelene Bates say that although they wanted to offer plenty of room and privacy in the house's expansive bedrooms, they also wanted to keep the main gathering areas (the great room, kitchen, deck and home theater) in the same general area.

"It never made sense to us to put the theater in the basement," says Madelene Bates. "This prevents you from running up and down the stairs to get to the kitchen."

Although the couple plans on moving to another recently-built custom home, Bruce Bates says that they won't miss their old home too much.

"The other home is nearby in Fulton and it's the same basic design, only smaller," says Bruce Bates. "This is a good area to be stuck in a rut."

About the house --A winding private road in the Hiland Park Farm development leads to the all-brick house, built in 2005. Out front, the center of the blacktop circular driveway is accented with a small brick walkway, a garden and a fountain.

The dark-wood double doors open to reveal a spacious foyer that leads to a sitting room, dining room and great room with high ceilings and arched windows.

A stairway from the great room leads upstairs, which is split by a long open hallway that overlooks the first floor. At one end of the hallway are the spare bedrooms and the other end is the master suite.

The elevated deck is located off the great room and features a unique design. Supported by a series of cement-reinforced, Greek-inspired columns, the deck's surface is covered with concrete tiles that provide support for walking and space for water to seep into the drainage system that empties out into the columns below.
