General helpers at Patapsco Valley

Patapsco Valley State Park is seeking volunteers to staff its visitor centers, lead interpretive programs, guide nature walks and hikes, maintain trails, help control invasive species, participate in park clean-up and help with gardening, staffing control stations and general maintenance.

Wine in the Woods starting May 17

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting applications from volunteers ages 21 and older for its 16th annual Wine in the Woods Festival, to be held May 17 and 18 at Symphony Woods in Columbia.

In exchange for a 3 1/2 -hour shift, volunteers will receive an admission ticket redeemable either day at the festival. Available shifts are from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

An orientation for new volunteers will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 14 at Recreation and Parks headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.

Legal aid helpers to work with abused

The Domestic Violence Center, a nonprofit agency providing services to women and children who are abused, is seeking volunteers to work with the organization's legal advocate coordinator to help clients petition the courts for protective orders.

Training is offered; legal experience is not required.

Child care providers are needed while parents attend counseling sessions. Child care is needed during evening hours.

Volunteers are also needed to staff a help line and to assist at events.

Various openings at historical society

The Howard County Historical Society is seeking volunteers to maintain and update its archives, catalog books, acknowledge gifts, add to files, keep up its garden and grounds, help schedule and install exhibits and give tours.

Volunteers are especially needed Tuesdays and Saturdays, but are welcome anytime. Training is available.

Culinary students to help with gala

The Columbia-based Restaurant Association of Maryland is seeking culinary students from local colleges to lend a hand at its Stars of the Industry Awards Gala on April 28 at Martin's West in Baltimore.

Movers for horse res cue farm

Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon is seeking volunteers to help in the farm's move to a 58-acre agricultural preservation property near the current 18-acre facility. The nonprofit horse-rescue organization has received an agritourism enterprise permit, which gave permission for the move.

Volunteers are needed before April 30, when equipment, materials and horses must be moved.
