Van jumps curb, hits two, kills 3-year-old

A 3-year-old girl died last night after a passenger van jumped a curb in Baltimore and struck her and another child, prompting a street brawl, police and fire officials said.

The Dodge minivan was traveling west in the 1000 block of W. Fayette St. when it hit the children, said Baltimore police spokeswoman Nicole Monroe. The incident occurred just after 7:30 p.m., said fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright.

After the children were hit, several people confronted the occupants of the van, and the "street erupted into violence," Monroe said.

The children were taken to University of Maryland Medical Center, where the girl was pronounced dead, said Cartwright. The condition of the other child was unknown last night.

Cartwright said the driver of the van was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Monroe said she did not know last night whether the female driver was injured as a result of the crash or the brawl.

Monroe said the occupants of the van were taken into custody.

The case is being investigated by the Police Department's accident investigative unit.
