Towson women squander 4-goal lead in 13-10 loss

Towson's women's lacrosse team had no problem with close conference games last weekend, getting a big lead and holding it to beat Drexel and coming from behind to beat Hofstra, each by a single goal.

Last night was a different story.

The No. 16 Tigers jumped out to a four-goal lead, but No. 12 George Mason slowly came back and pulled away late to take a 13-10 victory in a physical Colonial Athletic Association game at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

The Tigers (9-4, 3-1 CAA) had too many turnovers at critical moments and too often forced their offense while the Patriots (9-2, 2-1) clamped down with a quick-to-double-team defense.

"We just told them after the game, `You need to be ready to play confident the whole game,' " Towson coach Missy Doherty said. "Physically, we're ready to go, but mentally, we fell apart a little bit on offense."

George Mason didn't take its first lead until Chelsea Gamble's free-position goal made it 7-6 with 17:05 left in the game. Megan Udovich and Megan Bartlett then boosted the lead to 9-6.

Hillary Fratzke's goal with 8:30 left brought the Tigers to 10-8, but Laura King finished off a transition goal from Alana Chan with 5:57 left, and that was all the Patriots would need.

The Tigers, who have lost every game this season in which they scored 10 goals or fewer, outshot the Patriots, 32-27, but they had two big stretches without goals - more than 20 minutes of the first half and almost 16 minutes in the second half.

Early on, scoring wasn't a problem as the Tigers went up 4-0 in nine minutes, but the Patriots started coming back as three free-position goals pulled them to 4-3. The Patriots tied it when Bartlett found Madalyn Jamison open in front of the goal with 5:01 left in the first half.

"We just talked to our team about being tough," said Patriots coach Amy Bokker, who called a timeout when Towson took the 4-0 lead. "We knew Towson was going to come out and be physical. I told them to be confident ... and we started putting it together a little bit."
