Used cell phones sought to raise funds

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is collecting used cell phones to raise money for Relay for Life, the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The phones will be recycled for their precious metals or refurbished for use in developing countries. The phones contain dangerous metals such as lead and cadmium, which are released as phones break down in landfills.

Each phone collected represents a donation to the American Cancer Society that ranges from $1 to $30, depending on the brand and model of the phone. Phones can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays in the main lobby at Howard County Recreation and Parks headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.
