Meade and Archbishop Spalding posted historic wins in girls lacrosse last week.

The Mustangs won their first game in five years, while the Cavaliers notched their first win in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference in two years.

Susan Cookman, a senior attack, scored four goals Friday to lead Meade (1-1) to its first victory in more than 50 games.

Senior midfielder Katie Kirk, who is Cornell-bound, scored five goals to lead Spalding to its first conference win in two years, 9-5 over Bryn Mawr, then No. 8, on March 25.

It was the Cavaliers' fifth win overall against one loss under first-year coach Moira Leavitt, who coached Seton Keough last year. The victory enabled the Cavaliers to crack the Sun's Top 15 poll at No. 9

The Cavaliers' only loss was by 10-6 to No. 4 McDonogh, also last week.

Softball -- Sophomore Kourtney Salvarola, who had a standout freshman season at Broadneck last spring, has orally committed to the University of South Florida. Salvarola, a pitcher-shortstop, hit a state-record 12 home runs, scored 38 runs, knocked in 41 and hit .698 while going 13-3 with a 1.37 ERA and 139 strikeouts in 107 innings. "Lately, it's like a trend in softball that once you verbal, you're pretty much signed, even though you can't officially sign until your junior year," said Salvarola, who also plays volleyball and basketball, and is considered one of the county's top athletes. "I visited South Florida and really liked it and knew I wanted to go there." Salvarola expects to play shortstop in college.
