Tudor house has expansive spaces

Desirable Spaces

A master suite with a sitting room would be a desirable feature in any house. But what if there were four master suites - in the same house?

That's the embarrassment of riches in this Tudor-style house sitting on more than 2 acres in Harford County. Four of the five bedrooms are on the upper level; each spacious bedroom has its own adjoining seating area - some with fireplace - and its own bathroom.

"It's not a cookie-cutter house," says owner John G. Berger. "It's unique."

Berger, who has owned the property for about four years, has overseen many of the renovations, including transforming a deck into a sunroom, upgrading the floors to a deep-red mahogany and refacing the kitchen cabinets.

Now, Berger, who has 11 grandchildren, is looking to downsize and find a property with a little less land to maintain, although he admits, "It's therapeutic to take care of the lawn."

About the house --Built in 1985, the house has a partial brick exterior and a steepled entryway with a stained-glass door. Inside, the house has several levels and many architectural details, such as pilasters, arches and deep crown moldings.

The formal living space sits lower than the formal dining room and the two rooms are separated by custom, detailed ironwork that Berger was able to salvage from another property.

The kitchen opens onto a sunken family room - actually two rooms in one with a separate sitting area with a fireplace and an entertainment area with built-ins. The sunroom, which used to be a deck, has parquet floors, a skylight and an open-beam, vaulted ceiling with walls of windows. The room overlooks the in-ground pool and an expanse of trees. A home office with vaulted ceilings is also located off the family room.

Address --2654 Baldwin Mill Road, Baldwin 21013

Asking price --$798,900

Taxes --$5,666

Size --The house has more than 20 rooms and 6,000 square feet of living space.

Features --The lower level is finished and has walk-out access to the pool and patio area. This level includes an in-law or nanny suite with a bedroom, full bath, a kitchenette and slate floors. Also on the lower level is a living area with a coffered ceiling and a separate room that the owner uses as a wine cellar.

On the main level, the kitchen has a brick alcove with cooktop, stainless-steel appliances, granite countertops and an island with a butcher-block top.

Most living areas have wood floors, except for a few of the bedrooms, which are carpeted.

There are three wood-burning fireplaces located throughout the property. A separate detached building can be used as an exercise room or arts and crafts studio. A two-car garage is attached.

Listing agent --Tom Rye, Coldwell Banker, Bel Air, 410-515-2000.
