Carroll's victory veteran

Q&a Brittany Dashiell, John Carroll, Soccer

March 09, 2008

Brittany Dashiell has learned a lot while playing sports at John Carroll.

She played on the varsity soccer team that won the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title in the fall of 2005, and she also was on the lacrosse team that captured the conference championship last spring.

But her most recent title might have been the most satisfying. Dashiell, who's been playing soccer and lacrosse since she was 5, scored three goals to help John Carroll win the A Conference indoor soccer title recently. Lacrosse is her main sport, and the junior midfielder has orally committed to play at University of Florida. Dashiell stays busy off the field as a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

What is your favorite sport to play?

My favorite sport is probably lacrosse. That's what I enjoy the most. ... I've played it my whole life. Even in my spare time, I like to play it for fun.

What did it feel like to score three goals in the indoor soccer title game?

It was an awesome feeling. Normally, I play defense, so I don't score all that much. But my coach moved me up to offense, so I got an opportunity to go to goal.

You've been fortunate to be on three championship teams, but is each one a different experience?

Definitely. When I was a freshman, in outdoor soccer, I knew our team was great so I expected us to go far. And then, with indoor soccer this winter, in the beginning I didn't think our team was going to be good. But ... our team got a lot better and I thought we deserved it in the end. In lacrosse last year, I didn't expect to go that far but our team worked really hard... . It was probably the best championship out of all of them.

How hard is it to be play sports all three seasons of the school year?

I guess I'm used to it because my whole life I've always played a sport and never didn't play a sport, so I learned to manage my time well. ... It's definitely a big commitment, though.

Why the early commitment to Florida?

I've seen a lot of schools, and when I visited Florida, I just knew that it was the place that I wanted to go because I loved everything about it. I know I want to go toward the medical field when I'm there.

What's in your iPod now?

I like to listen to Ballyhoo, Can't Hang and then I downloaded some Drunken Camel songs. They were seniors at John Carroll last year.

Last year in lacrosse, you were the surprise team that won the championship. How is that going to affect things this year?

It's definitely going to be a big difference this year because we're going to have to work that much harder since everyone is going to be out to beat us. But I think we'll come through in the end.

What was the big key that turned everything around in indoor soccer this year?

Our hard work and dedication to support each other and work together. ... We worked well together; we always went hard and never let down and never let anyone get past us.
