March 07, 2008|By Chris Kaltenbach , Sun reporter

Tension, a rarely seen film noir classic starring Richard Basehart, Barry Sullivan, Cyd Charisse, Audrey Totter and William Conrad, will be shown for free tomorrow at the Enoch Pratt Free Library as part of the "Rare Reels: The Best Films You've Never Seen" series. Directed by John Berry, who would later fall victim to Hollywood's '50s-era blacklist, the 1949 film is the story of a druggist who plots to kill his two-timing wife, but whose plans get waylaid when he falls in love with another woman, and someone else kills the guy his wife's been fooling around with. Showtime is 2 p.m. in the Wheeler Auditorium of the central library, 400 Cathedral St. Information: 410-396-5430 or prattlibrary.org/calendar.

Hitchcock revival series

The Paradine Case (1947), starring Gregory Peck as a London barrister defending (and falling in love with) a woman accused of murder, is this weekend's entry in the Charles Theatre's six-month Alfred Hitchcock revival series. The film also stars Ann Todd, Charles Laughton, Ethel Barrymore and Charles Coburn. (Peck, by the way, was no fan of the film, once saying he wouldn't mind seeing the film burned.) Showtime is noon tomorrow at the Charles, 1711 N. Charles St., with encore screenings set for 7 p.m. Monday and 9 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $6 tomorrow, $8 other times. Information: 410-727-3456 or thecharles.com.
