Henry D. Scriba, 85

Henry Douglas Scriba, a former Calvert School business administrator, died of complications from a stroke Thursday at Oak Crest Village retirement community. He was 85.

Mr. Scriba was born in Baltimore and raised near Hollins Market. He graduated from City College in 1940 and served in the Army Air Forces during World War II.

In 1948, Mr. Scriba went to work at Calvert School, which offers a home-schooling curriculum that's widely used in this country and abroad. He retired in 1986.

While working at Calvert, he earned degrees in business and education from the Johns Hopkins University.

The longtime Reisterstown resident was a founder of the Wakefield Valley Golf Club and a member of the Johns Hopkins Club.

Mr. Scriba was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Glyndon, where he was a cantor, lay minister and parish council member.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. today in the chapel at Oak Crest Village, 8820 Walther Blvd., Parkville, where Mr. Scriba had resided since 2005.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, the former Margaret Price Ebeling; a son, H. Douglas Scriba Jr. of Catonsville; four daughters, Margaret S. Rice of Ellicott City, Sally S. Deaton of Niskayuna, N.Y., Nancy S. Noppenberger of Catonsville and Molly S. Levis of Bel Air; two sisters, Genevieve Miller of Catonsville and Verna Guercio of Frederick; and 11 grandchildren.
