The countywide 2008 Black Saga Competition will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at Randallstown High School, 4000 Offutt Road.

Three-student teams from 40 elementary and 14 middle schools in Baltimore County will compete to determine who will advance to statewide competition.

The program was started by Charles Christian, author of Black Saga: the African American Experience, to challenge students to learn the answers to more than 800 questions about the African-American experience.

County teams won six of the top 10 rankings in last year's statewide competition.

Towson

Obama team set to open an office

Maryland Women for Obama and Baltimore County for Obama will hold a grand opening of the Barack Obama Campaign Office at 6 p.m. today at the law office of Kathleen Cahill, 15 E. Chesapeake Ave., Towson.

Organizers said the office will be a focal point for campaign activities in Central Maryland for Obama, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.

Health

Heart checkup offered for free

The American Heart Association will offer a free heart checkup from noon to 3 p.m. tomorrow at Towson Town Center Mall in front of Macy's.

The checkup will be performed by Union Memorial Hospital staff as part of the association's Go Red for Women Campaign and National Wear Red Day today. Macy's will present a Go Red for Women Fashion Show at 1 p.m.

Dundalk

Smith to receive Renaissance Award

The Dundalk Renaissance Corp. has given its first Renaissance Award to Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith Jr. for his contributions to the community's revitalization over the last six years.

The organization also gave a Milestone Award for contributions to Dundalk's revitalization to community leaders Harry Wujek and Lil Tirschman, and the local newspaper, the Dundalk Eagle.

Recipients will be honored March 8 at DRC's Renaissance Milestone Celebration at the Sparrows Point Country Club. Tickets are $75. Information: 410-282-0261.
