Stars eager to shine

January 28, 2008|By LOS ANGELES TIMES

The red carpet may have been a soggy, rainy mess but the stars at the Screen Actors Guild Awards were anything but, upping the glamour quotient for the event to Oscar-night proportions.

Floor-sweeping trains, all-over beading and gobstopper-sized drop earrings were everywhere as women ditched the show's traditionally casual look for fashion with a capital "F."

There were many hits and few misses, perhaps because the stars had plenty of time on their hands to think about what they were going to wear, now that the writers' strike has stretched into its 11th week.

And despite the bad weather outside, the must-have accessory was decolletage, with strapless and bare, one-shouldered silhouettes the rule of the evening.

Metallics were a major trend on the red carpet, as they have been on the runways.

Deborah Messing looked chic in a gold-embroidered tulle gown with a jeweled collar by Oscar de la Renta, while Eva Longoria wore a white and silver zigzag Naeem Khan gown and huge Verdura ruby drop earrings.

Fashion plate Cate Blanchett may be pregnant, but she still looked stunning in a draped navy taffeta Balenciaga gown by Nicolas Ghesquiere, with silver embroidery.

Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie, who is usually one of the most elegant at awards shows, wore a shapeless earth-tone ombre tent.

As for the men, well, the bow tie might be an endangered species, as guests got creative with long, four-in-hand neckties or no ties at all.

Ryan Gosling wore an unbuttoned gray pinstripe shirt with a sharkskin gray vest, while Viggo Mortensen looked great in a red vest, black shirt and red tie.
