Mobile shoe store is stolen

A mobile shoe store stocked with more than 1,000 pairs of sneakers and steel-toed boots was stolen from a Glen Burnie parking lot, a store employee and police said.

The 28-foot box truck - stripped bare - was recovered in Baltimore County hours after the theft Thursday from the parking lot behind the Red Wing Shoes retail store and warehouse in the 7100 block of Ritchie Highway, said Karen Gower, the industrial sales manager.

She said she lost about 1,140 pairs of shoes, socks and shoe inserts, worth about $150,000. "They gutted it all ... busted the window and tore the latches and all the locks off the truck," she said. It has been repaired and restocked and is back on the road.

A surveillance tape showed a man stealing the truck at 12:53 a.m., Gower said. She said a second tape outside a bar in the 3500 block of Annapolis Road in Halethorpe showed the man fleeing from the truck at 2:39 a.m. and getting into a dark-colored sedan. No arrests have been made.

Baltimore County police spokesman Bill Toohey said an officer found the truck at 3:52 a.m. and referred the investigation to the Anne Arundel police.

The truck travels to contractors and construction sites to sell shoes to workers, Gower said.
