[ Age 91 ] Mechanical engineer `called himself a sales engineer,' stepson says

Harold Arthur Strohman, a mechanical engineer who had worked for Cummins Engine Co., died of congestive heart failure Tuesday at his Severna Park home. He was 91.

Mr. Strohman was born and raised in Lebanon, Pa. He was a 1933 graduate of Lebanon High School and graduated in 1935 from Mercersburg Academy.

After earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in 1939, he went to work for Babcock & Wilcox Co.

He was called to active duty in 1940 and served in World War II as an Army ordnance expert, including commanding the Hawaiian Ordnance Depot in Hawaii. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

In 1946, he joined the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, Pa., which was then the largest manufacturer of steam locomotives in the world. He later transferred to the company's New York City district office.

He left Baldwin and went to work for Cummins Engine Co. in New York City. From 1954 to the 1960s, he was Cummins' regional sales manager in Harrisburg, Pa. He then worked at the company's Baltimore diesel engine distribution center until his retirement in 1978.

"He always called himself a sales engineer," said his stepson, Richard B. White of Fairfield, Pa.

Mr. Strohman was a member of the Elks and the Millersville 55 + Club. He attended St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church in Severna Park.

He enjoyed reading, bridge, golf and playing his clarinet.

His wife of 42 years, the former Hilda Groh White, died in 1990.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Barranco & Sons Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Laura Lewis of Severna Park; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
