Black history event planned for Feb. 10

The villages of Columbia, the Columbia Association, the African Art Museum of Maryland and the Howard County Center of African-American Culture will sponsor "Roots of Howard County: In Celebration of African-American History" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 10 at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road.

The Ambassadors of Jazz, an accomplished youth jazz group, will perform. "Images of Freedom" poster contest entries will be on display, and light refreshments will be served.

Those who attend can visit the African Art Museum of Maryland and enjoy a display presented by the Howard County Center of African-American Culture.

Performances continue at Rainbow Theatre

Rainbow Theatre at Slayton House in the Wilde Lake Village Green will continue its series of performances with Peter Rabbit Tales, presented by Tucker's Tales Puppet Theatre on Feb. 15.

Beatrix Potter's classic children's stories - The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, and The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse - are acted in turn-of-the-century costumes.

Performances are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance; $6 at the door, if available. Group rates are available; reservations are not. Exact cash or checks only are accepted.

Military

Completes training -- Seaman recruit Anthony Barker, a 2005 graduate of Wilde Lake High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training and was meritoriously promoted to his current rank at Recruit Training command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Parent-tot play groups -- Town Center Community Association is accepting registration for the winter session of Parents & Tots Play Groups, which began Jan. 8. Children ages 6 months to 4 years meet Tuesdays. Children 6 months to 24 months meet Wednesdays. The Thursday group is filled. The groups meet from 10 a.m. to noon. The session runs for 10 weeks. Groups, which are limited to 15 children, meet weekly at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road. $25 for Columbia residents; $27.50 for nonresidents. Siblings can enroll for half price. Environmental action -- The Town Center Community Association will sponsor an Environmental Action Group to educate and foster environmentally positive action in the community. The group, which will be led by Town Center board member Stephen Meskin, will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road. Mah-jongg -- Those ages 18 or older are invited to Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center for mah-jongg at 10 a.m. Wednesdays. Admission is free. Participants are invited to bring a game and attend with a friend. 410-730-3987.

Senior yoga -- Yoga Center of Columbia will continue its senior classes at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The slower-paced, gentle yoga classes emphasize breathing and stress reduction. Classes are held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays through Feb. 14. The cost is $78 for a six-week session; $15 to drop in. Columbia lien payers can request a 10 percent discount. Shiatsu massage -- Wilde Lake senior residents are invited to attend a luncheon at noon Friday at Slayton House in the Wilde Lake Village Green. The cost is $5. The lunch includes a demonstration of shiatsu massage presented by Dee Weir, a licensed therapist. The event is sponsored by the Wilde Lake Community Association. Reservations are required by Tuesday. 410-730-3987.`Yikes McGee' -- Howard County folk singer Tony McGuffin will present "The Yikes McGee Show," a collection of his original political protest songs sung in the persona of McGuffin's political alter ego, Yikes McGee. The performance, which also features guest Christina Van Norman, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday at Mad City Coffee, 10801 Hickory Ridge Road. There is no cover charge. McGuffin is a former director of the Ellicott Theatre, former president of the Ellicott City Democratic Club, and founder of the Western Howard County Democratic Club. Belly dance -- Mia Naja al Sephira will offer a belly dance class for children at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The Saturday morning classes, which run from Feb. 2 through March 15, are sponsored by the Wilde Lake Community Association. Mommy and Me classes (for mothers and fathers - and their children) will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The classes are for ages 6 to 12. The cost is $72 for six sessions; $15 to drop in.
