UMBC men 86 Hartford 85

With the clock ticking down to 3.6 seconds last night, UMBC coach Randy Monroe knew exactly what he wanted to do. With his team trailing by two, he called a timeout, set up a play for senior guard Brian Hodges and waited for the celebration that would follow.

Hodges took a pass from Darryl Proctor well outside the three-point line, and with Hartford's Michael Turner squarely in his face and the clock about to run out, he took a step back and put up a fadeaway jump shot that hit nothing but net. As the buzzer sounded, the Retrievers put their hands in the air, celebrating an 86-85 victory over their America East rival.

"It was on line when it left my hands," said Hodges, who scored a team-high 24 points, hitting nine of 14 from the field, including six of nine on three-pointers. "It felt good when it went in."

The 6-foot-3 guard from Upper Marlboro also played impressive defense, shutting out Jaret Von Rosenberg, Hartford's junior guard who was averaging 11 points entering last night's game.

Hartford (8-10) had arrived at UMBC's RAC Arena on a three-game winning streak, looking to stretch its perfect conference record to 3-0. But UMBC, which lost its first home game and first conference game of the season Saturday to Maine, was looking to rebound and improved its record to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the America East.

"We ended up with the right person guarding him," Hartford coach Dan Leibovitz said. "But you can't stop it if a guy steps back and just goes over your head."

Hartford shot 55 percent, with Warren McLendon coming off the bench for a career-high 29 points. Joe Zeglinski scored 25, including a basket with 28.3 seconds left to give Hartford a momentary 85-83 lead.

The Retrievers got double-digit scoring not only from Hodges, but also from Proctor (19 points, 15 rebounds) and Ray Barbosa (13 points), as the team shot 46.2 percent from the field, including 56 percent from three-point range.
