Upset over Old Mill buoys Severn girls

January 16, 2008|By Pat O'Malley

The Severn girls basketball team got what coach Chuck Miller called an "enormous" win, upsetting then-No. 9 Old Mill, 48-44, last Wednesday at Severn.

The Admirals (12-3, 6-0 in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference) went 15-for-19 from the line, including four straight by junior Leanne Hug in the final minute to seal the win.

"As a result, the kids think they can play with anybody now," said Miller, a retired FBI agent who is in his eighth season.

Miller coached the St. Mary's junior varsity for nine years, taking the Saints to the league championship game every year before taking the Severn job.

"What I've tried to do at Severn is build a successful program and play the county public schools," said Miller, whose team lost to No. 12 South River by two points early in the season. "I think we are every bit as good as most county public school teams."

Severn is led by 5-foot-11 senior Taylor Wieczorek, who is averaging 12 points and 11 rebounds, junior Katie Dickerson (11.7 points per game) and sophomore point guard Aura Payne (four assists per game).

Sophomore guard Leah Cranmer, who had a game-high 18 points against Old Mill, also has contributed to the Admirals' fast start.
