Wiley-Gatewood out for season

The Maryland women's basketball team announced that Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood will sit out the remainder of the season because of injuries.

Wiley-Gatewood, a highly touted, 5-foot-9 point guard from Pomona, Calif., who joined the Terps in midseason last year after a season and a half at Tennessee, has not played at all this season because of tendinitis in her knees. After playing in 22 games last season, averaging 5.6 points and 2.4 assists, Wiley-Gatewood has missed the entire 2007-08 season while rehabilitating her knees. In a statement issued by the school, coach Brenda Frese said Wiley-Gatewood, who had offseason surgery, will return for next season.

Meanwhile, Christie Marrone, who transferred from Virginia Tech last season, will graduate this summer, passing up her final year of eligibility, the school announced. Marrone, a 5-6 native of Brooklyn, N.Y., received limited playing time last season, averaging 2.5 points and 1.3 assists in 24 games. She has played in just one game this season because of lingering foot injuries.
