A 31-year-old West Baltimore man who fired a gun to mark the new year was shot by police early yesterday after he did not drop the weapon, police said.
Officers were investigating a domestic violence call at the rear of the 1900 block of W. Lafayette Ave. when, about 12:10 a.m., they responded to shots fired from just behind them on the same block of West Lanvale Street, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman.
Four officers surrounded the man, and he was shot by at least one of them in the abdomen after he failed to heed their orders, Moses said.
The wounded man fled through a building fronting Lanvale and crossed the street to his home, where he called for medics, Moses said. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was listed in serious condition, Moses said.
Officers recovered a .38-caliber handgun, the spokesman said.
Police declined to name the man until charges are filed after his release from the hospital, Moses said.
The officers have been placed on standard administrative duty pending an investigation by homicide detectives.
