Library offers preschool classes, activities

Preschool children's classes at the Savage branch library next month are designed to foster language development and early literacy through stories, new vocabulary and print and letter recognition.

"Play Partners," for infants and toddlers to 23 months, features stories, baby games and musical activities. The 20- to 30-minute program is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Jan. 30.

"Rock 'n' Roll Toddlers," a 30-minute program for ages 1 and 2 with an adult, offers music and movement activities. Sessions are scheduled at the library at 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, and 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

"Chill Out With Science," a class for ages 3 to 6 with an adult, explores simple science concepts and experiments inspired by children's literature. The four-week series will be held at 10 a.m. Mondays (except Jan. 21) from Jan. 7 through Feb. 4. Registration begins tomorrow. Dec. 31

"3, 2, Fun!" -- for ages 2 and 3 with adult, will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 15 through Feb. 26.

Gallaudet teacher Kathy Pongor will teach functional American Sign Language in a three-week series of classes for ages 4 and older at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 8 to Jan. 22. Registration begins Wednesday.

Artist's photographs -- Photographs by Columbia artist Chiyuki Tanaka will be on display until March 1 in the Himmelfarb Gallery at Tai Sophia Institute, 7750 Montpelier Road, North Laurel. Harmonic Nature, an exhibition of black-and-white and color photographs, reflects the photographer's lifelong interest in nature and music. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. 410- 888-9048.

Refuge classes, walks -- Although Patuxent Research Refuge's National Wildlife Visitor Center is temporarily closed for repairs through mid-March, outdoor programs are continuing, and the Visitor Center grounds and trails remain open from sunrise until 4:30 p.m. daily, except federal holidays and during severe weather. Prospective visitors can check the refuge's Web site, http:--patuxent.fws .gov or call 301-597-5763.

A Winter Bird Walk for ages 16 and older will be offered at the National Wildlife Visitor Center from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Jan. 8. A volunteer naturalist will lead the search for winter resident and migrant birds. Binoculars and field glasses are recommended.

At the North Tract, children ages 8 to 10 can learn about Life Under Cover, that is, under leaves, logs and soil, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 6.

Savage Bluegrass -- The musical group Savage Bluegrass will appear at Sam's Bar and Restaurant on U.S. 1 South in Laurel at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 and 7 p.m. Jan. 22. There is no cover charge. 301-317-7796.
