Grandmothers for Peace holding fundraising hootenanny Feb. 2

Grandmothers for Peace will sponsor a "Hootenanny for Peace," with the Columbia Psychedelic Hoot Band, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way.

Those who attend are invited to sing, along with the band, wear 1960s clothes and bring 1960s pictures for a "Guess Who?" board. Floor pillows are welcome.

The suggested donation is $10; $5 for students. Most of the proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

Seeking volunteers -- The A-OK (Assisting Our Kids) mentoring and tutoring program, a project of Oakland Mills Interfaith Center, is recruiting and training volunteers to work in elementary and middle schools with individual children and small groups. Reiki treatments are available by appointment between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the first and third Fridays of each month. The cost is $30 for a 55-minute treatment.

Jesse Barnes, dancer and fitness trainer, will teach soul line-dancing from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost is $4 a class. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Registration is continuing.

Tai chi will be offered from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursdays. The cost is $6. Beginner Tai Chi for Arthritis will be offered from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $4 a class.

New senior classes -- The East Columbia 50+ Center, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer a scrapbooking class from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. The cost, $5 a session, includes materials. Participants should bring photos to the class. 410-313-7680.

An eight-week Spanish class, sponsored by Howard Community College, is to begin Jan. 22 at the 50+ Center. Classes will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 22 through March 11. Registration is required by Jan. 2. The cost is $89 and includes a book and compact disc. 410-313-7680.

Art -- You Can Draw and Paint classes, sponsored by Howard County Recreation and Parks, will be offered from 9:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Fridays, starting this week at East Columbia Senior Center. The10-week class is $60. Students should bring watercolors, acrylics, oils or pastels, or whatever materials are on hand.
