Three people were killed yesterday evening in a multiple-vehicle crash on U.S. 15 in southern Frederick County, state police at the Frederick barracks said.

All three were pronounced dead at the accident scene, near Point of Rocks.

Their names were withheld pending notification of family members, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of one vehicle was speeding north on the shoulder of U.S. 15 and attempting to pass other vehicles about 5:30 p.m.

He sideswiped another northbound vehicle, causing both to enter the southbound lanes and crash into two other vehicles, police said.

Two occupants of one vehicle died, as well as one person in a second vehicle.

It was unclear last night whether they were in the north- or southbound lanes.

Police said the occupants of the other two vehicles were uninjured.

The accident remains under investigation.
