JOHN GILBERT POWER, died of melanoma at his home in Derby Line, VT., on Tuesday, December 11,2 007. He was born on November 16, 1950 in Baltimore, the son of Gordon and Ethel Power. During high school and college he worked at Camp Greentop in Thurmont, MD. John graduated from Swarthmore College in 1973, and after working on a tulip farm in The Netherlands for 1 year attended the University of Maryland, where he earned an MLS. He first worked as a librarian in Carroll County before moving in 1984 to Vermont to take a job at the Northeast Regional Library in St. Johnsbury. In 1991 he graduated from Vermont Law School. John practiced law in New York City for 4 years. He survived the first attack on the World Trade Center, descending 59 flights with his co-workers to safety. After working in Boston he returned to Vermont to work as a public defender, and to open a law office with a partner, Doug Willey. Illness forced John to stop practicing law earlier this year. In 1985 he married Carol Rund Swett, who survives him . Also surviving are daughters , Kim Swett and Colleen Swett, and a dearly loved grandson Brandon Swett. He leaves his step-mother Cathe Power of Phoenix, brothers Gordon of Redlands, CA, Garrett of Baltimore, Steve of Monkton, sisters Vallie Larson of Monkton, Andrea Burgoyne of Cockeysville and Adrienne Smith of Monkton. At his request there will be no funeral service.
