Fisher's Bakery, 8143 Main St., Ellicott City, has changed its name to "Sweet. A bakery & cafe."
The bakery will concentrate on custom wedding and other party cakes, catering, and a cafe and deli business for tourists, residents and workers in the historic district.
The bakery will remain partially open during the first week of January, when some minor renovations are planned.

The owner, Ellicott City resident Christopher J. Sikora, purchased the bakery from the Fisher family about two years ago.
Norbel student gets award for collage
Mai-Phuong Trinh, a student at Norbel School in Elkridge, was the recipient of the Maryland Art Education Association award for her paper collage. Students from area private schools who are members of the Association of Independent Maryland Schools were invited to submit work.
The collage was selected for submission to the competition by art teacher Marissa Ohnishi. It will be on display next month, along with work by students from other private schools, in the tunnel of the State House in Annapolis.
Howard High to greet incoming parents
Howard High School will hold an Incoming Parent Evening at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 in the school auditorium. An English for Speakers of Other Languages program is to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Discussion will cover the academic program, course registration timeline, ninth-grade team activities, career academies, AP Scholars program, performing arts, JROTC, and extracurricular activities.
The snow date is Jan. 15.
Elkridge firehouse plans breakfast
The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge, will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Jan. 6.
Baked goods will be available.
The cost is $7; $6 for those ages 55 and older. Children ages 5 to 12 pay $5; children to age 4 eat for free.

Bridge players get advanced classes
Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will offer bridge classes at the Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center, 10481 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.
A new class for advancing players, "Bid Better, Play Better," will focus on bidding accurately and planning the play of the hand. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Fridays, Jan. 11 through Feb. 15. Prerequisites are "Bridge Brush Up," "Bid and Play" or approval by the instructor.
