Forum to address personality disorders

The Howard County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will sponsor an educational forum, "Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder," at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia.

Dr. Joseph Schwartz, clinical director of psychiatry at Howard County General Hospital, will lead the forum.

Doors open at 7 p.m. for light refreshments.

Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.

The chapter sponsors support groups for those affected by mental illness and their friends and families.

A support group for people living with mental illness who work, go to school or regularly interact with others in the community meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center. (Call 410-772-9300 for a holiday schedule.)

A family support group for families and friends of adults with a mental illness meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the Day Room at Harmony Hall Retirement Community, 6336 Cedar Lane, Columbia, and at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month in Room 3, Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 10755 Scaggsville Road.

The next meetings are scheduled for Jan. 8 and 28.

A support group for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with serious mental health issues meets from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month at the Faulkner Ridge Center, 10598 Marble Fawn Court, Columbia.

The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 30.

Enrollment event for Medicare Part D

The Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging will present its last scheduled enrollment event for Medicare Part D from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way.

The enrollment event, sponsored by the Office on Aging's Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program, is open to people with Medicare and their families or caregivers who would like help comparing prescription drug plans on the Medicare Web site.

Those who attend will have an opportunity to speak to a counselor and to enroll in a plan.

Registration is requested but not required.

Help with the Medicare prescription drug coverage is available weekdays at the Bain Center and on Wednesdays at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

Instructor to offer workshop on healing

Karl Ardo, a certified teacher of the Chinese system of qi gong healing, will offer a workshop in "Taiji Ruler," a series of movements said to stimulate acupuncture points and promote healing for the practitioner or others.

The class will be offered from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Baltimore Center for Wellness, 3691 Park Ave., Ellicott City.

The cost is $90.

The class can be taken with or without the "ruler," which costs $50 and will be available on the day of the class.
