Player of the Year

R.J. Bass

After losing key contributors to graduation from last year's team, the Cougars had holes to fill and an identity to find. Sacrifice played a big part, and Bass took on the lead role by moving from the forward position he played the past two seasons to the back line.

Using his athleticism, poise, skills and leadership, he provided an anchor on defense, and the No. 12 Cougars enjoyed an overachieving season with a 11-4-1 record.

"It just gave us a real mental lift. He understood and accepted the team concept and stepped out of position to help the team," Fallston coach Chris Hoover said. "His play gave us invaluable confidence and allowed us to continue our style of play."

Coach of the Year

Dominic Rose

Bel Air

The No. 7 Bobcats overcame a string of injuries to make an improbable run to the Class 3A state title game, winning 11 straight games before falling to Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 1-0, in the final.

Despite losing four players because of broken bones and two others because of extensive injuries, Rose, in his eighth season, was able to find productivity with the players he had to work with. After a 3-3-1 start, Bel Air did not lose again until the title game to finish the season with a 14-4-1 mark.

For the playoffs, five of the six injured players were back on the field as the Bobcats captured the Class 3A East regional title, winning three games on penalty kicks to reach the program's second state final. The team's first came in 1995.
