Scrapbooking, Spanish classes slated Tuesdays at 50+ Center

The East Columbia 50+ Center, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer a scrapbooking class from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays.

The cost, $5 a session, includes materials. Participants should take photos to the class. Sessions are offered on photo safety and preservations, getting organized, cropping and journaling, tools and techniques and advanced scrapbooking.

An eight-week Spanish class, sponsored by Howard Community College, begins Jan. 22.

McGahee toy giveaway scheduled for Tuesday

The Community Action Council of Howard County will hold the first Willis McGahee Toy Giveaway at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Dasher Green Head Start Center.

Along with Anita Marks of ESPN 1300 radio, McGahee, a running back for the Ravens, has been collecting toys for Head Start children. Some of the toys have been contributed locally.

The council provides programs and emergency services for low-income Howard County residents. In addition to its Head Start program, the organization provides housing and energy assistance and a food bank.

Seeking volunteers -- The A-OK (Assisting Our Kids) mentoring and tutoring program, a project of Oakland Mills Interfaith Center, is recruiting and training volunteers to work in elementary and middle schools with individual children and small groups. Opportunities are available during school hours, after school and in elementary school homework clubs. Reflexology -- deep foot massage -- is available between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Mondays. The cost is $40 for a 50-minute treatment. Appointments also are available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Fridays.

Reiki treatments are available by appointment between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the first and third Fridays of each month. The gentle technique is said to restore physical, emotional and spiritual balance and harmony. The cost is $30 for a 55-minute treatment.

Jesse Barnes, dancer and fitness trainer, will teach soul line-dancing from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost is $4 a class. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Tai chi will be offered from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursdays. The cost is $6. A new class, Beginner Tai Chi for Arthritis, will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $4 a class.

A new evening exercise instructor, Sharon Cunningham, will teach from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost is $30 a month; $4 a class to drop in. 410-313-7680.

Martial arts -- Long Reach Community Association will offer martial arts classes from Jan. 8 through Feb. 28 at Stonehouse. Classes for ages 5 to 11 will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; for those ages 12 and older, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
