Accidental shooting kills hunter, 46

A hunter is dead after another hunter mistook him for a deer and shot him, authorities said.

Maryland Natural Resources Police said James W. Dawson Jr., 46, of Rawlings was fatally shot early Saturday near the Dans Mountain Wildlife Management Area in Allegany County. Police said Dawson was one of two hunters mistaken for deer by a third hunter.

Police didn't identify the hunter who fired the shot, and they did not say whether Dawson was wearing blaze-orange clothing. The errant hunter called 911 from a cell phone to report the shooting.

The fatality remains under investigation.
