Savage library to hold Writers' Circle session tomorrow

The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, will hold its Writers' Circle at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

Aspiring authors are invited to share original work with others for support and comment.

Historical Society postpones meeting

The Savage Historical Society will not meet, as originally scheduled, on Dec. 17.

Closed -- Patuxent Research Refuge's National Wildlife Visitor Center is temporarily closed for repairs through mid-March. The center's heating and ventilation systems will be repaired. The refuge's grounds and visitor trails will continue to be open from sunrise to 4:30 p.m. except some weekdays. Visitors are advised to call ahead to confirm that programs are being held and grounds are open because repair work is contingent on the weather. 301-497-5763.

Early reading -- The Savage branch library will offer activities for preschool-age children to help foster language development and early literacy. "Play Partners" includes stories, games and musical activities for infants through 23 months with an adult. The program, lasting 20 to 30 minutes, will be offered at 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Registration is not required.

"That Jolly Old Elf," a program of stories, songs and a craft with Santa Claus, will be offered for ages 3 to 5 at 10 a.m. tomorrow; ages 2 and 3 at 10 a.m. Tuesday; ages 2 to 6 at 7 p.m. Tuesday; ages 2 to 6 at 10 a.m. Thursday; and ages 2 to 6 at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Registration is required.

Bluegrass -- Savage Bluegrass, whose members are from Savage, Jessup and Laurel, will perform from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Oliver's Old Towne Tavern, 531 Main St., Laurel. There is no cover charge. 301-490-9200.

Meal with Santa -- The Savage Volunteer Fire Company will sponsor "Breakfast with Santa" from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the fire company social hall, 8925 Lincoln St., Savage. Eggs, pancakes, sausage, coffee, orange juice and milk are on the menu. The cost is $7 for adults; $3 for children to age 10. Children to age 3 can eat for free. 301-725-6049.

Santa, friends -- The South Laurel Recreation Council Inc., which is celebrating 38 years of community service, will present The Penguins' Playground by Bob Brown Puppets, followed by a visit from Santa and his friends, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 16 at Deerfield Run Community Center, 13000 Laurel-Bowie Road, Laurel. Admission is free.

Registration is open for holiday workshops for children, teenagers, adults and families. The sessions are being held at the Montpelier Carriage House and the Deerfield Run Community Center. Available are children's and family workshops on making stamped greeting cards, bow-making, making a Hershey Kiss tree, beaded pins and a holiday wreath. Helping -- North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center, a cooperative center created by local nonprofits for residents in the southeastern part of the county, has expanded to include counseling, legal assistance, information and referral, immigrant services and assistance with food, energy and housing.
