All season long, the Arundel Wildcats lived by the pass. Last night in the Class 4A state championship game at M&T Bank Stadium, they died by the pass in a 36-30 loss to Quince Orchard of Montgomery County.

The Cougars won their second state championship, with the other in 1991. The Wildcats, who won a state title in 1975, were playing in their first final since 1979.

Quince Orchard quarterback Jaron Morrison connected with Travis Hawkins on a 78-yard touchdown pass with 1:30 remaining to give the Cougars a 30-23 lead and cap a 16-point comeback in the fourth quarter.

Quince Orchard (14-0) trailed 23-7 midway through the final quarter before scoring four touchdowns in the final eight minutes.

Thomas Addison was a key to the rally, scoring touchdowns on runs of 28, 86 and 42 yards. He finished with 19 carries for 219 yards.

Were the Wildcats tired?

"I hope not," Arundel coach Chuck Markiewicz said. "But we had a lot of guys going both ways. And we don't do that a lot. They played their hearts out. Sometimes the tank is empty."

Nick Elko had another big game for the Wildcats (13-1), completing 34 of 52 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. Brandon Johnson-Farrell had two touchdown catches and also returned a punt for a touchdown.

Both teams added late touchdowns. Addison's 42-yard run gave Quince Orchard a 36-23 lead with 43 seconds left. Elko then found Johnson-Farrell for a 12-yard touchdown with seven seconds remaining.
